Conquer Auyán Tepui: 14-Day Adventure with Rappelling Descent from Angel Falls

14-Day / 13-Night Land-Only Tour

Set against the backdrop of the ancient wilderness of the Gran Sabana, where towering table mountains rise from vast savannahs, this is an epic adventure deep into the heart of the Guiana Highlands.

Follow one of the world’s most spectacular trekking routes to the summit of Auyán Tepui, the mighty tabletop mountain from which Angel Falls—the tallest waterfall on Earth—plunges into the jungle below.

After reaching the summit, embark on a thrilling descent by rappelling down the side of the falls over the course of two days, camping on the cliff face for an unforgettable night surrounded by clouds, mist, and the roar of cascading water.

This once-in-a-lifetime expedition combines world-class trekking, technical ropework, and awe-inspiring natural beauty—an adventure truly reserved for the bold.

Key aspects of this tour

Rappel Down the World’s Tallest Waterfall

a vast expanse of untamed wilderness and otherworldly landscapes. Scattered across this UNESCO World Heritage Site are nearly 30 tabletop mountains known as tepuis—ancient sandstone plateaus that rise dramatically from the jungle floor.

Among them, none is more imposing than Auyán Tepui, the largest by surface area and revered by the local Indigenous people as the "Mountain of the Devil"—a sacred, mysterious realm shrouded in legend.

Spanning over 700 km², Auyán Tepui harbors a unique world born of extreme isolation and ever-changing weather. Vast sinkholes, hidden caves, and seasonal streams that vanish as suddenly as they appear mark this enigmatic landscape. Rare frogs, mammals, and insects have evolved in complete isolation on its remote cliffs of sand and stone.

Towering above it all, Angel Falls—the tallest waterfall on Earth at 979 meters—plunges from the tepui’s summit, so high that its waters turn to mist before ever reaching the ground.

On this unforgettable 14-day expedition, you'll trek through jungle trails to reach the summit of Auyán Tepui, camp atop its eerie plateau, and explore the surreal ecosystem near the brink of the falls. Then, under the guidance of expert instructors, you’ll rappel down the side of Angel Falls, descending through clouds and mist in a heart-pounding, once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Designed for both beginners and experienced adventurers, this guided tour blends technical challenge, raw nature, and ancient mystique into a single journey. It’s more than just a trip—it’s a return to the rhythm of the Earth.

World-Class Extreme Trekking Adventure

When most people think of visiting Angel Falls, they picture a boat ride upriver and a short one-hour hike to view the majestic cascade from below. But this tour is a completely different beast.

This is an epic 9-day expedition that takes you deep into the heart of Venezuela’s ancient Guiana Highlands. You’ll trek up the remote backside of Auyán Tepui, the tabletop mountain from which Angel Falls plunges, spending 7 days hiking across its otherworldly summit—and then 2 unforgettable days rappelling down the face of the world’s tallest waterfall.

This is not just about seeing Angel Falls. It’s about feeling it—up close, with all your senses, fulfilling a primal desire to become part of the landscape, not just an observer of it.

The itinerary includes a rest day atop the lost world of Auyán Tepui, where you can soak in the silence, the views, and the surreal beauty of this isolated plateau.

Worried about the rappel? Don’t be. Expert guides will teach and support you every step of the way. If you’re reasonably fit, no prior rappelling experience is required—though we do recommend trying it out beforehand if possible.

And when you pitch your tent beside the falls and sleep under the stars to the sound of a 979-meter torrent crashing into the abyss... you’ll know this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Guided by Experts Who Know the Tepuis Inside and Out

Your journey will be led by local guides who are true experts of the Guiana Highlands, the Venezuelan Andes, and the country's most remote wilderness regions. These seasoned professionals don’t just know the trails—they live and breathe the mountains of Venezuela.

With their deep knowledge of the terrain, weather patterns, and ecosystems, they will not only guide you safely across the tepui, but also enrich your experience with fascinating insights into the landscape and its hidden wonders. You’ll feel both secure and inspired every step of the way.

Fuel for the Journey: Delicious and Varied Meals

Trekking up to 7–8 hours each day across rugged terrain demands energy—and a lot of it. That’s why mealtime becomes one of the most anticipated parts of the day.

Even with limited ingredients that can be carried on the trail, our guides and porters prepare hearty, varied meals that change daily, ensuring you stay energized and satisfied without ever getting bored. Good food uplifts the spirit, and on a challenging expedition like this, a warm, flavorful meal can be just as powerful as the breathtaking views.

Information

Trekking Equipment Guide
Hiking Boots
We recommend lightweight, waterproof hiking boots with high ankle support.

Large Bag, Trekking Poles, Suitcase, etc.
A large bag that can hold all your gear during transfers is convenient. During trekking, unnecessary items can be consolidated and left at the hotel, so please bring a lockable bag.

Daypack
Used during trekking to carry rain gear, warm clothing, and essentials. A capacity of about 30 liters is sufficient.

Sleeping Bag
Provided on the tour, but feel free to bring your own if preferred.

Sleeping Bag Cover
Useful for added warmth and waterproof protection. Gore-Tex covers are highly recommended. Sleeping mats will be supplied on site.
Clothing Recommendations
For trekking, a layering system is best:
Base layer (underwear: T-shirt or long-sleeve) + long-sleeve shirt + sweater + windbreaker (rain gear).

Temperature fluctuates greatly at high altitudes, so dressing in layers that can be easily added or removed ensures comfort.

T-Shirts
Avoid cotton; choose quick-drying, moisture-wicking materials designed for hiking.

Long-Sleeve Shirts
Worn over the base layer. Wool is acceptable, but quick-drying fabrics are more comfortable.

Sweater
Use as insulation during activity—fleece or similar warm, quick-drying materials are ideal.

Underwear
Hiking-specific long-sleeve base layers are very useful and can be worn to bed at camp.

Pants
Avoid cotton; stretchy, breathable materials that allow free movement are best.

Rain Gear
Gore-Tex separate top and bottom sets are preferred. A compact umbrella can also be handy.

Socks
Quick-drying socks are recommended; wearing two layers is comfortable. Avoid cotton.

Gloves
Wool or similar warm gloves for nighttime use.

Hats
Bring two types: a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection and a warm hat for cold weather.

Warm Jacket
Nights can get very cold, so a thick down jacket or similar warm coat is essential. Alternatively, rain gear plus a sweater can suffice.

Sunglasses
Strong UV protection is important. Having a spare pair is advisable.

Headlamp
A standard headlamp is sufficient; don’t forget spare batteries.
Other Essentials
Water Bottle
Can be filled with hot water at camp for use as a hot water bottle (~1 liter capacity).

Thermos
Stainless steel models are reliable.

Sunscreen
High SPF and strong protection required. Don’t forget lip balm.

Insect Repellent and Medicine
Bring your personal medications as well as remedies for stomach issues, colds, and other common ailments.

Toiletries
Toothbrush, shampoo, toilet paper, and wet wipes are very handy.

Plastic Bags
Useful for garbage, organizing items in the tent, and waterproofing.

Writing Utensil
Always carry a pen for filling out customs and immigration forms.

Camera
Capture your unforgettable memories.
River Crossings and Water Activities During Trekking
The extent to which you get wet will vary depending on the weather and the river’s flow on the day.

We recommend wearing a swimsuit or carrying rain gear during transfers.

Please note: When traveling by boat, umbrellas cannot be used due to the high speed of the vessel.

During water activities in Canaima, please wear water shoes that cover your toes or sandals.

Occasionally, sharp rocks submerged in the water may cause injuries to feet or other parts of the body, so please take care.
Luggage Information
Between Caracas and Puerto Ordaz:
One carry-on bag up to 8 kg, and one checked bag up to 23 kg.

Between Puerto Ordaz and Canaima:
Carry-on luggage allowance is 10 kg.

Items that cannot be taken to Canaima can be stored in Puerto Ordaz and retrieved either upon returning to Caracas or at Santa Elena.

Please do not leave any valuables in checked luggage.
Currency Exchange
Due to the highly unstable exchange rate in Venezuela, we do not recommend that guests exchange money on their own.
If you need cash for shopping, dining, or other expenses, our staff will cover the costs on your behalf—please feel free to ask us.
